Social Research Scientist – open position

Public Health – Seattle and King County is seeking a Social Research Scientist (SRS) to perform professional, independent, creative, and highly skilled data analysis, interpretation and presentation of qualitative and quantitative health data to a variety of audiences. The SRS will assist with evaluation of Best Starts for Kids, an initiative to improve the health and well-being of King County by investing in prevention and early intervention for children, youth, families, and communities, and other related projects. Evaluation will inform the Best Starts for Kids delivery of services and programs for children and youth and the communities they live in.

Duties:

  1. Review and interpret qualitative and quantitative data, including health, health care, behavioral health, community, economic and housing data to inform Best Starts for Kids strategy areas and activities.
  2. Act as a liaison with other agencies and community groups on data translation and application.
  3. Provide technical consultation to departmental staff on quantitative and qualitative data trends.
  4. Oversee Best Starts for Kids program, service and policy evaluation; coordinate these efforts with Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS), Public Health staff, and community agencies.
  5. Communicate data findings to diverse audiences, including public health and human services professionals from multiple sectors, policymakers, and community organizations.
  6. Plan and participate in dissemination of findings: prepare reports, presentations and scientific papers; participate in conferences, meetings and seminars.
  7. Assist in policy, service and programmatic priorities based on data trends.
  8. Synthesize literature and data for development of policy and programs, and evaluation of existing strategies.
  9. Contribute to grant proposal development.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of a social or behavioral health science (e.g. public health, medical anthropology, social work, psychology, health economics) or closely related public health field.
  • Experience developing evaluation frameworks and logic models, identifying outcomes, and drafting evaluation tools and protocol.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of: public health practice and principles; the determinants of population health, advanced qualitative analytical and interpretative skills, ethnographic principles and methods, epidemiological methods, and basic quantitative analysis principles and methods.
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret health, health care, economic, housing, and/or community data.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of local communities, populations, and demographic principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to draw sound conclusions from quantitative and qualitative data, and write accessible interpretations of those conclusions.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work with diverse populations and community groups.
  • Skill in working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of individuals, including the public, elected officials and representatives of government agencies.
  • Skill and demonstrated proficiency in using spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and MS Office.
  • Skill and demonstrated expertise in data/knowledge retrieval via literature and web searches.
  • Advanced communications skills (oral and written), and demonstrated ability to oversee, write, and present complex reports for technical and/or lay audiences.
  • Skill in managing multiple tasks requiring attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to respond to deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Skill in preparing grant proposals, scientific reports, and publishable health literature.
  • Ability to be flexible and work on multiple and evolving projects.
