Location: Washington, DC

Primary Role:  The public health specialist will be responsible for providing technical and managerial expertise in programming and research related to HIV and AIDS, gender, and stigma The incumbent will be required to work both in teams and independently on projects.  Based on team and institutional priorities, the incumbent will undertake other tasks as assigned by the Team Director.  International travel of up to 30% to countries where ICRW is implementing projects may be required.

Education: PhD or Master’s degree in a relevant field

Experience: Two (2) to five (5) years relevant organizational or field program experience. Master’s degree candidates will need an additional five (5) years of relevant research or organizational or field program experience. Previous research and/or program work experience in Africa or Asia is preferred, as well as a working knowledge of and an interest in stigma, gender, and HIV and AIDS issues.  Experience with HIV and AIDS program related work and research, as well as monitoring and evaluation, project management, including facilitating partner and donor relations, report writing, budget maintenance, and work planning preferred.

Language:                    Proficiency in French, Spanish or other foreign language is desirable

Skills:

  • Excellent writing and communication skills; demonstrated resourcefulness and attention to detail. Computer literacy required to include a proficiency in the MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel), Internet applications including online database applications (e.g., MEDLINE, POPLINE) and use of reference manager (e.g. endnotes).
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analysis skills to include a proficiency in one or more of the following software packages:  SPSS, STATA, N6, Atlas Ti. (Please include relevant coursework and research experience in each application.
  • Experience developing Monitoring and Evaluation frameworks, including objectives and indicators.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage small projects, donor relationships, and provide leadership to other team members with maturity, diplomacy, and a cooperative spirit.  Must possess the ability to work independently, organize, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement and evaluate applied research.
  • Comfort with and ability to travel alone and work with partners in-country.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and build capacity of local research partners in monitoring, evaluation, and research approaches.
  • Must be a team player committed to building an innovative portfolio of research and program work that addresses stigma, gender, and HIV and AIDS issues.

Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Works simultaneously on a variety of projects with a focus on HIV and AIDS, stigma, and gender. Responsible for project oversight and management, including project budgeting and reporting to donors, and technical assistance to partners.
  • Actively contributes to the development of new project proposals, including grant writing and budget estimates, on proposal development teams.  Activity will require working with individuals across the institution (e.g. finance, contracts, etc).
  • Writes and disseminates project findings in a number of formats, including program design documents, donor reports, institutional publications, journal articles and conference presentations.
  • Develops and maintains strong donor and implementing partner relationships.
  • Represents ICRW at selected external meetings.
