Media Advocates for Prevention Program Assistant
Organizational Background:
Incorporated in 1993, the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES) is
a not-for-profit 501[c] (3) organization based in New Orleans,
Louisiana. IWES is dedicated to improving the physical, mental, and
spiritual health and quality of life for women of color and their
families. IWES is a social change organization that strives to improve
the lives of women, youth, and communities of color through sexual
health education, training, and advocacy.
Program Description- Media Advocates for Prevention:
The Media Advocates for Prevention (MAP) Project is an adaptation of the
Community PROMISE intervention, a science-based, CDC-approved curriculum
for HIV prevention that has been proven effective for youth at high
risk. MAP integrates media advocacy and development to create
youth-appropriate media pieces that promote HIV risk reduction and
testing among African-American and Latino youth. We utilize a youth
development framework with our core group of youth peer advocates, who
then impact their community through a peer-outreach model.
Position Description:
The Media Advocates for Prevention Assistant is responsible for working
with program staff to ensure youth participation and representation in
the youth-directed initiatives of IWES. Initial responsibilities
include assisting with the administration of the IWES adolescent health
survey, including: data collection, data management, analysis, and
report writing. Additional responsibilities include maintaining the MAP
myspace page, assisting with Monitoring and evaluation, curriculum
development, etc. S/he is responsible for assisting program staff with
planning, promotion, and implementation of public health activities for
youth. This is a part-time position (approximately 10-12 hours per
week) under the supervision of the Program Director for HIV Prevention
and can be adapted to fit the needs of a Capstone or internship.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s degree with training and experience in public health.
* Experience with survey administration, data collection, and
analysis- a plus.
* Experience with youth-directed programming and training
initiatives.
* Knowledge, skills, and abilities relating to HIV risk reduction
interventions, sexual and reproductive health, adolescent health, and
minority health.
* Experience in media development – a plus.
* Knowledge of MYSPACE- a plus.
* Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills,
including
experience in cross-cultural exchanges.
* Highly organized and task-oriented. Good time management
skills.
* Proficient in current versions of Windows, Microsoft Office,
Email,
and Internet.
* Spanish language skills – a plus.
* Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a
team.
* Willingness to work night and weekend hours as requested.
Desired starting date is September 2008. Compensation is dependent on
education and experience.
