The New Orleans Health Department’s Blueprint for Safety Project is offering a graduate level summer internship. The Blueprint for Safety is a singular philosophically based model policy that coordinates each criminal justice agency’s response to domestic violence; including, 911, Law Enforcement, the Sheriff’s Office, Prosecution & DA Victim Advocates, Probation & Parole, Court Administration and the New Orleans Family Justice Center. The intern who fills this position will assist the Project’s Interagency Coordinator in facilitating the criminal justice agencies’ implementation of the New Orleans Blueprint for Safety.
Fields of study may include, but are not limited to: Criminal Justice, Women’s Studies (including any study of domestic violence), Political Science, Public Affairs or Pre-Law (including policy writing/analysis), Public Health, Ethnic Studies, or Social Sciences.
Responsibilities
The Blueprint Project offers a dynamic multi-faceted internship that includes working with each of the above named agencies and attending inter-agency working groups and meetings. The internship will primarily focus on two aspects of the Project, addressing impact disparities in the development of Blueprint policies and analyzing domestic violence arrests and case dispositions locally and nationally. The 2015 summer intern will work with a team of local advocates to engage the community of African-American women arrested for domestic violence in order to develop policies and practices that avoid unintended consequences. The intern will also work with the NOPD and other agencies in processing and analyzing domestic violence case information.
The intern is expected to commit 40 hours per week. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Input domestic violence data from the NOPD into Blueprint database and produce statistical reports for NOPD COMSTAT
- Prepare an annual aggregate public report based on Blueprint database
- Develop recommendations for the Blueprint Project based on analysis of database
- Organize and conduct focus groups of survivors and practitioners & work with the Blueprint Team to incorporate information learned into Blueprint policy and practice
- Analyze and code police reports; compare and cross analyze data with focus group information in order to develop recommendations on avoiding impact disparities
