Job Description
RTI International is a knowledge-driven non-profit organization with a vision to be among the world’s leading independent research organizations. RTI’s International Development Group (IDG) is committed to transforming project-based knowledge and experience into corporate intellectual capital that can be widely shared throughout the organization and applied for a variety of purposes: 1) technical stature and dissemination, and 2) reputation-building 3) proposal development, 4) project work in other settings. IDG seeks to appoint a postdoctoral applied researcher to contribute to this effort. This is a fixed-term, limited to a two-year appointment.
The IDG Postdoc Applied Researcher will be responsible for preparing dissemination products based upon IDG project materials, supplemented by literature reviews, and/or interviews with current and/or former project staff. S/he will report to IDG’s Senior Fellow in International Public Management. S/he will undertake the following specific tasks:
1. Review project products (reports, workplans, evaluations, assessments, etc.) to identify project experience, technical topics, approaches, and/or tools appropriate for intellectual capital development. Suggest and discuss ideas and options with IDG staff and supervisor and agree upon a work program.
2. For options selected, review and analyze materials, collect supplemental data (as needed), undertake literature reviews that can “anchor” topics in an appropriate analytic and/or operational stream of work, undertake interviews with project and/or IDG staff (as needed) as input to drafting applied research and technical products.
3. Write up results in one or more of the following formats: policy or lessons learned briefs, monographs, manuals, workshop presentations, and/or articles suitable for academic journals and the RTI Press. Undertake revisions, based on obtained feedback on drafts, to move products to final versions. Specific formats will be agreed upon according to IDG needs. Some products will be co-authored with IDG staff members.
4. Coordinate and report on IDG intellectual capital and dissemination products. Maintain and update a database and provide input for IDG quarterly reports, and respond to other periodic reporting needs.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate for the IDG Postdoc Applied Researcher position will meet the following criteria:
1. Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree completed within 3-4 years of application for the postdoc position. (Actual research Ph.D. is preferred, though equivalent is acceptable if original research at Ph.D. level has been performed.) Ph.D. will be in a social science discipline relevant to IDG’s areas of technical expertise.
2. Excellent communication skills, including demonstrated technical and academic riting ability.
3. Demonstrated excellence in research and analytic skills. Evidence of research experience and successful authoring of research reports, policy briefs, and/or academic articles required.
4. Demonstrated ability to work independently on a range of tasks, collaborate effectively with others, deal with competing demands, write quickly and well, manage time commitments, and take independent initiative.
5. Experience in a developing or transition country preferred but not required.
6. Native English language skills or native speaker/reader/writer equivalency.
Terms of employment
This is a fixed-term position limited to a two-year appointment.
