Occupational Health and Safety Specialist

The New York City Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene’s (DOHMH’s) Office of Employee Health and Safety is seeking to hire an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist. Under the program Director, the position will coordinate the agency’s respiratory protection program. The staff member will provide technical support in the management and/or implementation of environmental and occupational health and safety programs. Additionally the staff member will support the Office of Employee Health and Safety in promoting a safe work environment for DOHMH employees. Duties will include inspecting work sites to determine compliance and conducting analyses on the effectiveness of safety and health programs. The position will respond to issues pertaining to health, safety, and security issues at DOHMH facilities, clinics, laboratories, and health centers throughout the five boroughs. This could involve air/environmental sampling, hazard assessments, and policy/program development. Emergency response and preparedness experience is a plus. Familiarity with personal protective equipment, ability to wear respiratory protection, and ability to carry and use equipment in the field is essential. Employee must be willing to work 12 hour shifts which may include nights and weekends in the event of an emergency.

The qualified candidate will possess:

1. A Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research
capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or

2. A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time experience in the appropriate field of specialization, including one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization.

Environmental and occupational safety and health background with a minimum of 4-6 years of work experience is preferred. Experience in healthcare and laboratory environments is a plus. Experience in using exposure monitoring equipment and performing environmental sampling is desirable. Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal communication, organizational skills, and ability to work independently are preferred.
