Industrial Hygienist
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Incumbent will join Office of Environmental Investigation and Agency Response Team to respond to environmental public health issues related to emergency and non-emergency events, including acts of terrorism, within the City of New York. The incumbent may: provide technical assistance, oversight, and/or act as agency liaison at hazardous materials incidents and other events affecting public health; assist in recognition, evaluation, and control of hazards; assist in radiological/biological and/or other type decontamination and remediation projects; prepare written materials including health impact assessments and public information materials; liaison with and advise NYPD and FDNY HazMat units and affected entities; and perform post-initial response environmental sampling. The incumbent will also train and advise agency staff in environment, health and safety and preparedness matters; assist with training and selection of PPE; and develop and review relevant Department protocols including response plans, sampling protocols, and health and safety plans. Candidate will be required to have a New York State Drivers License.
The ideal candidate will have the following:
- A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
- A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of full-time experience in the appropriate field of specialization, including one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to ‘1’ or ‘2’ above. However, all candidates must have a master’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative, or research capacity as described in ‘2’ above.

NOTE: NEW YORK CITY RESIDENCY IS REQUIRED.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
Certified Industrial Hygienist or chemical engineering degree; advanced degree in environmental, public, or other related health field; demonstrable experience in biosafety, field sampling, decontamination methods, emergency preparedness, and or toxicology.
