NACCHO Community Health Team Internship Opportunities

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) is the national nonprofit organization representing the approximately 2,860 LHDs (LHDs) nationwide. NACCHO’s mission is to support efforts that protect and improve the health of all people and all communities by promoting national policy, developing resources and programs, seeking health equity, and supporting effective local public health practice and systems.

The Community Health team is one of four primary work teams that assists NACCHO in achieving its mission by providing resources, technical assistance, and tools that support LHD community health programs and services.

The projects housed on the Community Health team include: Adolescent Health; Birth Defects Prevention; Chronic Disease Prevention; Health and Disabilities; Adolescent HIV/STI Prevention; Immunization; Infectious Disease Prevention; Injury Prevention; Maternal and Child Health; Primary Care; Tobacco Prevention; and Traffic Safety. There are internship opportunities for the Adolescent Health and Maternal and Child Health-related projects. A description and contact information for these internships is provided below.

Adolescent Health Project Internship

Project Options:

The intern selected for the project will assist project staff in at least one of the following projects:

1. Assist in the development of a program compendium highlighting local health department approaches to teen pregnancy prevention that address one or more risk and/or protective factors affecting teen sexual behavior.

2. Assist in the qualitative analysis of key informant interviews with ten local health department staff members working on teen pregnancy prevention and teen HIV/STI prevention programs, for inclusion in a summary report.

Student Responsibilities:

Activities to accomplish these projects may include, but are not limited to: conducting internet and library searches, developing interview protocols, conducting interviews, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data. NACCHO will work with the student and the faculty advisor to further define tasks to achieve mutual objectives.

Time Frame:

* The internship will run onsite for at least 10 weeks. The start and end dates are negotiable.

Organization Support:

* NACCHO will provide office space, a computer, and other supplies needed to accomplish work activities.
* A monthly transportation stipend ($37.00) for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will also be provided.

Maternal and Child Health/Birth Defects Prevention Project Internship

Project Options:

The intern selected for the project will assist project staff in at least one of the following three projects:

1. Assist in the development of one compendium reflecting the best practices of LHDs related to birth defects prevention, disability, or disabling conditions.

2. Assist in the development and implementation of a tool to assess and evaluate the knowledge of birth defects and disabilities, or disabling conditions among LHDs to improve surveillance, prevention, and health promotion of these conditions.

3. Assist in the development of an issue brief summarizing five national home visitation program with profiles of local health departments that have implemented each of these programs (or similar programs) at the local level.

Student Responsibilities:

Activities to accomplish these projects may include, but are not limited to: conducting internet and library searches, developing data collection instruments, collecting data, and analyzing qualitative or quantitative data. NACCHO will work with the student and the faculty advisor to further define tasks to achieve mutual objectives.
