Market Umbrella is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation devoted to cultivating the field of public markets for public good. As part of that mission, Market Umbrella has partnered with several local and national organizations to continue our Farmers Market Prescription Initiative, which seeks to improve access to healthy food for New Orleans residents.
The Farmers Market Prescription Initiative is partnering with Daughters of Charity to introduce a Pre-diabetic Institute to their patients and make it easier to make healthy choices for themselves and their families. With this partnership, patients of the clinic will receive prescriptions to take to the Crescent City Farmers Market and purchase local fresh fruits and vegetables. The aim of this work is to conduct research on the impact of the physical and social environments on obesity.
This position will include enrolling program participants at community clinics, administering surveys, and data entry. Students should have their own reliable means of transportation, are dependable to be at the right location on time, are friendly and approachable to community members, and are patient with those who may need assistance with survey completion. The survey asks community members about their exercise and eating habits and requires a small amount of training. This position is unpaid but can be a great practicum or culminating experience opportunity for students.
