Epidemiologist – Southwestern Michigan

The Berrien County Health Department (of Southwestern Michigan) desires to fill a current vacancy for an Epidemiologist.

EPIDEMIOLOGIST – Starting at $52,271

Required: Possession of a Masters of Public Health degree with a major in Epidemiology OR a Masters degree in a Public Health field with a minimum of 12 combined graduate level term hours or 8 semester hours in epidemiology and biostatistics courses.

Possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license and vehicle.

Desired: One (1) year experience working in a public health agency in communicable disease and/or epidemiology.  Thorough knowledge of skills in public health and community organization theory.  Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.  Thorough knowledge and familiarity with state, regional and county health, social and educational agencies which impact upon health at the local level.  Demonstrated decision-making ability and problem solving skills. Ability to initiate, coordinate and implement policies, procedures and programs to meet agency goals and objectives.  Computer literacy with a variety of applications as they apply to department functions, statistical analysis and reporting.

Duties: Performs epidemiological and statistical analyses on data and prepares results for the Berrien County Health Department, Healthy Berrien Consortium, other health and social agencies and the general public.  Assembles databases for analysis of health problems and designs and manages surveillance systems for diseases of public health importance.  Proposes or initiates epidemiological investigations of communicable disease outbreaks, chronic illness conditions, disease risk factors, or other adverse health outcomes.  Identifies or proposes corrective action or interventions to prevent or alleviate public health problems based on epidemiological findings.  Produces routine statistical summary reports and special reports as needed.  Performs other work as assigned.
