The Division of General Internal Medicine & Geriatrics is looking for MPH students interested in a new practicum opportunity in community-based safety net clinics in the New Orleans metropolitan area.
Project: Using effective provider-patient communication to improve cancer screening in low health literacy patients
Study Objectives:
(1) To teach primary care physicians how to recognize low health literacy patients and effectively counsel them on cancer screening using risk communication and shared decision making
(2) To assess the impact of training on changes in physician communication behavior and changes in low health literacy patients’ cancer screening behaviors.
Student Learning Objectives:
(1) To learn about cancer risk communication and health literacy
(2) To learn strategies for recruiting patients to research studies
(3) To learn about survey development, implementation, and/or data analysis
Minimum Requirement: Students must have their own transportation to visit community clinics
