The National Cancer Institute, a major research component of the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Health and Human Services, is pleased to request applications from qualified candidates for a Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA). The Cancer Research Training Award provides an outstanding opportunity for an individual with a strong interest in understanding how cancer care (screening, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring) is delivered and has an impact on populations. The position will allow contact with a large number of scientists representing disciplines of health services research, economics, epidemiology, including experts in cancer screening, quality of care assessment, biomarkers for risk and disease, and other cross-cutting arenas of application.
Position Description: The trainee will function as a member of the Applied Research Program and work with scientists on projects related to the ARP mission specifically in cancer screening initiatives and biomarkers related to cancer control and population-level research. The trainee will work collaboratively in a support role with scientific staff at the National Cancer Institute in the design, development and analysis of research projects and grant-related activities. Day-to-day activities will include project management and coordination, assisting with the development of funding opportunities, summarizing international and national level cancer screening data for publication on the web, support of working groups related to the International Cancer Screening Network (ICSN), conducting literature searches and summarizing epidemiological evidence concerning biomarkers and cancer endpoints, assisting in the implementation of biomarker measurement projects in national health surveys (for example, NHANES), performing statistical analyses of biomarker data and carcinogenesis, conducting portfolio analyses of NCI funded research related to both screening and biomarkers, assisting in identifying biological specimen banks for research purposes, evaluating laboratory procedures particularly related to growth factors and hormones, gathering and summarizing background information about scientific findings and health policy; participating in program meetings; and attending lectures and meetings sponsored by the National Institutes of Health or other agencies.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a master’s degree in public health (MPH or MSPH), or 2 years research-related working experience in the public health field
- A strong interest in public health, population-based research and cancer control
- Experience conducting research or serving as a research assistant on a scientific project
- Excellent organizational, planning, writing, and project management skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- The ability to work independently and on research teams
- Data management skills and/or experience with spreadsheets
