Ibis Reproductive Health seeks an Associate to serve as fellowship director and to lead the Ellertson Fellowship, a two-year postdoctoral research and leadership training fellowship for social science and public health researchers, currently active at five fellowship sites (Columbia University, the Guttmacher Institute, Ibis Reproductive Health, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of California, San Francisco). The objectives of the fellowship are to support promising new social science researchers who study abortion and reproductive health, and to produce and share research that informs policy and program design in abortion and reproductive health. The Ellertson Fellowship was launched in 2003, and the third cohort of fellows will join the program in September 2008 at the five fellowship sites.

The fellowship director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Ellertson Fellowship and provides leadership and support to the fellowship site directors, fellows, alumni, the Fellowship Advisory Committee, and other allied individuals. The fellowship director coordinates fellowship activities and provides substantive leadership of the program, with a focus on supporting social science researchers to gain experience working on abortion and to continue as leaders in the academic and policy fields.

Job description:

Ibis Reproductive Health is a non-governmental organization headquartered in Cambridge, MA (USA)

with offices in San Francisco, CA, and Johannesburg, South Africa. Ibis Reproductive Health aims

to improve women’s reproductive autonomy, choices, and health worldwide. We accomplish our

mission by conducting original clinical and social science research, leveraging existing research,

producing educational resources, and promoting policies and practices that support sexual and

reproductive rights and health.

We seek an Associate to serve as fellowship director and to lead the Ellertson Fellowship, a two-year

academic and policy fields. The Associate will also participate in other ongoing research and policy

activities at Ibis, depending on experience and interest, and will participate in project development,

including idea generation, proposal development, and project implementation.

Qualifications:

1. Master’s or higher degree in Public Health, Sociology, Anthropology or a related social science

field (or equivalent experience), and demonstrated interest and experience in reproductive health

or social science research, policy and/or advocacy;

2. Familiarity with academic and independent social science research contexts and with researcher

career paths;

3. At least five years of progressive experience demonstrating strong program management

expertise;

4. Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills;

5. Proposal writing, reporting, and fundraising experience, preferably within the reproductive

health field;

6. Familiarity with abortion and reproductive health and rights policy and advocacy in the United

States and internationally;

7. Ability to make and carry out decisions independently; creativity and flexibility; dedication to

team building, staff development, and collaboration; and

8. A sense of humor.

Responsibilities:

1. Managing fellowship recruitment, review, and selection;

2. Planning and coordinating fellowship annual meetings, trainings, and seminars and the Social

Scientists’ Networking Meeting (held each year in association with the National Abortion

Federation annual meeting);

3. Expanding fellows’ policy and advocacy networks by facilitating connections for fellows relevant

to their areas of research;

4. Organizing external review of fellows’ research proposals;

5. Facilitating connections among sites and fellows and related clinical researchers;

6. Coordinating preparation and submission of national fellowship program and site budgets,

proposals, and reports for donors, ensuring that reporting is timely, accurate, and complete; and

7. Designing and implementing outreach strategies to raise the profile and visibility of the Ellertson

Fellowship and of the fellows’ work and to generate strong and deep applicant pools, including

communicating and promoting the goals and activities of the Ellertson Fellowship to selected

audiences through websites, newsletters, discussion lists, brochures, and national professional

and discipline meetings.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Dates and term of assignment: Position is available immediately. Full-time position (will consider

part-time positions for the right candidate) based in either San Francisco, CA, or Cambridge, MA.
