Youth program assistant

We think this could be an excellent fit for a summer Capstone and are open to working with any students to meet Capstone requirements.

Incorporated in 1993, the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES) is a not-for-profit 501[c](3) organization based in New Orleans, Louisiana.  IWES is dedicated to improving the physical, mental, and spiritual health and quality of life for women of color and their families.  IWES is a social change organization that strives to improve the lives of women, youth, and communities of color through sexual health education, training, and advocacy.

The Youth Program Assistant is responsible for working with program staff to ensure youth participation and representation in the youth-directed initiatives of IWES.  S/he is responsible for assisting program staff with planning, promotion, and implementation of public health activities for youth.  S/he will coordinate with other IWES staff to ensure effective program implementation.  Additional program tasks include assisting with Monitoring and evaluation, curriculum development, etc.  This is a part-time position (approximately 10-12 hours per week) under the supervision of the Program Director for HIV Prevention.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree with training and experience in public health.
  • Experience with youth-directed programming and training initiatives.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities relating to HIV risk reduction interventions, sexual and reproductive health, adolescent health, and minority health.
  • Experience in media development – a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, including experience in cross-cultural exchanges.
  • Highly organized and task-oriented. Good time management skills.
  • Proficient in current versions of Windows, Microsoft Office, Email, and Internet.
  • Spanish language skills – a plus.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work night and weekend hours as requested.

Desired starting date is June 2008. Compensation is dependent on education and experience.
