Incorporated in 1993, the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES) is a not-for-profit 501[c](3) organization based in New Orleans, Louisiana. IWES is dedicated to improving the physical, mental, and spiritual health and quality of life for women of color and their families. IWES is a social change organization that strives to improve the lives of women, youth, and communities of color through sexual health education, training, and advocacy.
The Communications Consultant is responsible for the management and coordination of media literacy, advocacy, and development activities for the outreach and educational initiatives of the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES). This position will promote the mission of IWES by working closely with other staff to support educational, training, and organizing activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
§ Develop and implement curriculum to train youth participants in interviewing skills, media literacy, media advocacy, media development, and social marketing.
§ Facilitate development of HIV prevention media messages.
§ Develop and implement media skills training (print, radio, video, TV, internet) with youth participants.
§ Ensure communications and messages are reaching the intended target audiences.
§ Coordinate activities with youth participants, school and community partners, and staff to develop strategies for media message dissemination.
§ Support communication and media channels and networks within the school and community.
§ Maintain media equipment.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
§ Bachelors degree in communications or related field.
§ Experience in health communications, media literacy, and social marketing.
§ Experience with community organizing, coalition building, and program implementation.
§ Experience with print, radio, video, TV media development and production, including Apple application (iMovie),
§ Knowledge, skills, and abilities relating to HIV prevention preferred.
§ Experience facilitating large group discussions, training, and workshops.
§ Excellent organizational and time management skills.
§ Proficiency in current versions of Windows, word processing software, email programs, and Internet.
§ Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, including experience in cross-cultural exchanges.
§ Sensitivity to cultural, racial, and sexual diversity.
§ Ability to work independently and as a team member.
§ Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
§ Commitment to organizational mission is essential.
Special Requirements:
Willingness to work occasional night and weekend hours. Limited travel may be necessary.
Desired starting date is July/August 2008. Compensation is dependent on education and experience. Willing to negotiate consultant rate.
