Position: Communications Manager

The National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) was formally established in 2001 to recognize and enhance the work of the nation’s public health institutes. NNPHI has twenty-eight members that are a combination of statewide non-profit, metropolitan, university affiliated and provisional institutes. NNPHI is housed at the Louisiana Public Health Institute in New Orleans, Louisiana, with whom it has an operational management contract to receive leadership and administrative infrastructure support. The vision of the network is fostering innovations that improve health. The mission is to promote multi-sector activities resulting in measurable improvements of public health structures, systems and outcomes.

Lead States in Public Health Accreditation and Quality Improvement: A Multi-State Learning Collaborative (MLC) is a three year project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and managed by NNPHI and the Public Health Leadership Society. NNPHI facilitates the networking and collaborative efforts of sixteen states as they prepare public health departments for national accreditation and improve public health practice through the use of quality improvement methods. Position Summary:
The Communications Manager will work closely with program staff, consultants and RWJF Communications staff to formulate, implement, and oversee the communications plan for the MLC and NNPHI. The Program Manager will lead the development of communications materials including press releases, brochures, flyers, web content, topical briefs, storyboards, presentations, etc. He or she will work with the MLC grantees to support the execution of their communications plans. In particular, the manager will work with RWJF staff to develop templates for grantees to use as they conduct their communications activities. In collaboration with project team members, the manager will ensure that the synthesized lessons learned from the project are diffused broadly to the public health practice community. In addition, the Communications Manager will lead efforts to archive and catalog documents and materials. The Communications Manager will report directly to the NNPHI Associate Director.

Areas of Oversight:
Communications planning, implementation and evaluation
Public relations, marketing and web content development

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required
• Masters degree preferred
• Minimum of 5 years of experience
• Experience in developing communications plans/proposals
• Public relations experience including: developing press releases, feature stories, and articles for newsletters and other print/electronic media.
• Experience working with a social marketing methodology preferred
• Experience working with multiple collaborators to produce communications pieces

• Must be self-motivated and independent, able to work with a minimum of supervision
• Work collaboratively with a diverse staff team to create and manage crossorganizational, integrated marketing strategies
• Coordinate communications projects with vendors and contractors for the development and production of educational promotional materials, web site production and other collateral items
• Review and edit existing promotional materials for marketing effectiveness, cross-selling implications and adherence to brand guidelines
• Working knowledge of MS applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
• Excellent people skills and an upbeat and enthusiastic attitude
• Understanding of and previous work in public health strongly preferred
