Project Title: Community Health Assessment Intern
Background on the Project: The New Orleans Health Department (NOHD) seeks to address population-level health issues so that all New Orleanians can achieve their full potential. A hallmark of this is the Community Health Improvement (CHI) process, out of which came the first city-wide Community Health Assessment (CHA) and Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). These planning tools have guided NOHD, partners, and stakeholders. NOHD will continue its CHI work by updating these tools to ensure that collaborative efforts are focused on the most pressing health issues affecting residents. NOHD and the CHI Steering Committee will utilize the Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) framework to guide CHI activities. The intern will work closely with the CHI Coordinator, CHI Steering Committee, local public health partners, and broader community to plan and implement the 4 MAPP Assessments. The intern will compile and analyze data in a report summarizing assessment findings that will be shared with internal participants and that will inform the Community Health Profile report. NOHD strongly desires for the CHA to reflect its departmental focus on health equity and envisions the CHA being a strong example of how the Department and City government can incorporate a Health Equity lens in their work. Students Responsibilities and Activities: NOHD will require having a set schedule for the CHI practicum, yet will allow for flexibility as it is needed to accommodate major practicum events and student conflicts. The recommended number of hours worked per week is 20. Following this recommendation, the approximate start date will be within the week of May 15thand end date within the week of August 28th. The intern will:
- Assist in planning and implementing Steering Committee convenings, Core Advisory Group meetings, and subcommittee meetings as they relate to the 4 MAPP Assessments.
- Research assessment methods utilized by other nationally accredited health departments; report on best practices and implications for New Orleans’ CHI process
- Assist in the development of a plan to monitor and evaluate the 4 MAPP assessments and design evaluation tools to support that plan.
- Assist in designing the 4 MAPP assessments, ensuring they incorporate methods to measure health inequities, uncover patterns of health inequity, and shed light on root causes of health inequities.
- Support the collection of primary and secondary assessment data.
- Display cultural competence and cultural humility while engaging with various audiences.
- Compile and analyze data collected through each of the 4 MAPP assessments that includes an analysis of the impact of the social determinants of health on health outcomes.
- Summarize findings in a MAPP assessment report that employs health literacy techniques, and utilizes quality and performance tools and technological resources available through the City’s Information Technology and Innovation Department.
The intern will be required to work a total of 300 hours. For students in the Global Community Health and Behavioral Sciences Department, this internship will fulfill your practicum and project requirements, upon approval from your faculty advisor. The intern will also be required to fulfill all reporting requirements mandated by the school’s practicum manual.

Transportation: Car is not required, but a form of reliable transportation is. Prior practicum students have chosen to bike, walk, or utilize Tulane’s shuttle services due to the complexities of parking at or around the practicum site. The majority of work will be conducted on the 8th floor of New Orleans City Hall, 1300 Perdido Street, New Orleans.
