Job Description
This position performs maternal and child health epidemiology functions for the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). This position will be responsible for surveillance, communication, investigation, reporting, and data driven education and mobilization for the Maternal and Child Health program with a specific focus on supporting the Title V block grant. Successful employees show initiative, work well with others, and can function in a dynamic environment. Surveillance activities include collecting, analyzing, and interpreting science-based data from multiple sources such as vital statistics. Communication functions include accurately disseminating results to support science-based decisions to decision makers and the target audience often using data visualization tools and the VDH website. Education tasks include technical assistance for state and local public health staff in the use of local health data. Current grants emphasize preconception, interconception, and women’s health; the role of this position will be to assist in the engagement of community partnerships to reach health goals. Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must show initiative and willingness to excel. Requires coursework and experience performing epidemiology. Ability to research scientific medical literature and apply findings to the solution of problems. Experienced use of SAS software. Experience required with the collection, manipulation, analysis, and quality control of large population-based datasets. Strong verbal communication and written presentation of findings; making presentations and conducting training; excellent writing abilities for professional and lay audiences; effective problem-solving and decision-making, ability to work independently. Knowledge in maternal and child health.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer Master of Public Health in Epidemiology degree or Public Health with advanced coursework in epidemiology and evaluation. Prefer experience in the field of public health epidemiology and evaluation. Experience with using data visualization tools to accurately disseminate results. Ability to develop goals and objectives to evaluate program effectiveness and utilize data as a tool to develop and prioritize community- based interventions and policies.
