New Orleans Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program

Work involves responsibility for the New Orleans Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program’s (New Orleans CLPPP) health education component. The community health educator plans, develops, implements, and evaluates comprehensive health education programs with specific educational objectives; provides technical and in-service training; conducts community health assessments; and performs related work as required. It includes the preparation, selection, procurement and dissemination of health information; use of all mass media and visual aides; health education program direction and technical assistance to professionals and the general public.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and plans health education programs and services for the New Orleans CLPPP
  • Develops, organizes, and conducts programs of staff education and in-service training
  • Establishes and maintains reference files on sources of health education materials for use by the staff of the New Orleans CLPPP and the community.
  • Prepares news releases, feature articles, radio programs and other publicity programs
  • Prepares reports, brochures and related materials on public health subjects
  • Collaborates with health specialists, public, civic, professional, and voluntary agencies to ascertain community health needs, determine availability of services, and to develop goals.
  • Promotes health discussions in schools and community agencies.
  • Design and conduct community assessment
  • Plan and implement educational programs
  • Coordinate activities with other agencies and groups
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of health education within assigned areas of responsibility, using pre- and post-program data to measure a program’s effectiveness against pre-established goals and objectives.
  • Develop and maintain resource files

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of public health, of health information and promotion techniques and behavioral science and/or communication theory.
  • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate health education programs and act as a resource person
  • Ability to develop innovative techniques to reach populations with appropriate and useful health information.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
  • Possess knowledge of principles of health behavior, preventive medicine and epidemiology.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate programs to impact attitudes, knowledge and behaviors for improved health.
  • Operate a personal computer and utilize a variety of software programs including Microsoft Office and desktop publishing.
  • Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Communicate orally in a clear, concise manner.

Education:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in health education or a closely related field. Master’s degree preferred.
