TRAINING PROGRAMS FROM THE CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN MATERNAL & CHILD HEALTH LEADERS
cEMCH LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM
The Tulane CEMCH program fosters continuous learning for maternal and child health (MCH) practitioners through seminars, workshops, and specialized coursework, ensuring up-to-date knowledge and practical skills to address the evolving needs of women, infants, children, youth, and families. It includes one-on-one mentoring to support long-term career goals and offers practica and community service outreach for hands-on experience in real-world settings. Conducted in partnership with public health agencies and organizations, the program emphasizes comprehensive MCH education. Additionally, it prioritizes research in maternal well-being, child development, and youth violence prevention, aiming to enhance health outcomes and promote equity.
MCH Epidemiology Doctoral Training Program
The Tulane Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Epidemiology Doctoral Training Program extends the training and support of the Tulane Center of Excellence in MCH to provide tuition support and a research and travel stipend to selected incoming MCH Epidemiology doctoral students. Scholars are expected to engage in advanced training in Social Determinants of Health, Life Course Theory, and Implementation Science, also open to doctoral students throughout SPHTM. They are also expected to engage in a practice experience with the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), Bureau of Family Health (including Title V Program) to build capacity to address the maternal and child health needs of Louisiana.
Trainees funded through this program bolster the analytic capacity of the Bureau, aiding in program planning, development and policy. It is anticipated that they will also join the essential MCH workforce upon their graduation, joining state health departments nationally or in other national and international jurisdictions. The goals of this program are to:
- Educate doctoral candidates who are competent in maternal and child health leadership and trained in the application of epidemiological methods to conducting action-oriented research in the MCH field
- Foster the enhancement of the functional and research capacity of local and state agencies in MCH epidemiology
- Contribute to the knowledge and empirical evidence base of MCH epidemiology practitioners

Tulane University MatCH Program
The Tulane University MatCH Program extends the training and support of the Tulane Center of Excellence Maternal and Child Health (CEMCH), and is a joint program between CEMCH and the Mary Amelia Women’s Center.
The overall goals of MatCH are to build the capacity for future MCH research that improves population health and addresses challenges in academic-practice partnerships. The program supports postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty by providing an interdisciplinary team of three faculty mentors, research and teaching resources, as well as targeted training aimed at ensuring scholar success. MatCH is also expected to enhance the scholar’s proficiency in the fields of population sciences and/or population health, social and environmental determinants of MCH, and health equity.
Our goal is to create an academically stimulating and nurturing environment for researchers in MCH or new to MCH, to facilitate their career development, and encourage paradigm-shifting, interdisciplinary / interprofessional collaboration and team science to advance research and practice.
