 Duties:
This is a 1 year non-permanent appointment. This position will both collaborate within DEL and with key state partners including the Department of Health, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Governor’s office and external stakeholders to support efforts to prevent childhood obesity per Governor Jay Inslee’s Healthiest Next Generation initiative (attached).

This position will serve as a key advisor to agency leadership on issues relating to childhood health, including how DEL can contribute to statewide efforts to increase physical activity, limit screen time, and enhance access to healthy food and beverages, including drinking water for all children and families.


This one-year position will represent DEL in an inter-agency work group to establish performance metrics, best practices, strategies and identify funding and policy recommendations this summer for the Healthiest Next Generation initiative for use in the upcoming Legislative session.


This position also will support DEL program administrators in identifying and implementing best practice strategies to boost childhood health focus in DEL programs and services, and will work with DEL child care health specialists to identify sustainable methods of sharing healthy programs and practices with child care providers.

This position serves as the Healthiest Next Generation Coordinator under the Partnerships and Collaboration Division. This position will participate in an interagency work group led by the Department of Health and including the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction to develop and implement a coordinated approach to reducing the burden of childhood obesity in Washington State, especially among populations disproportionately affected by the disease. This position will be responsible for working inside DEL to develop a unified approach to obesity prevention
Tasks
                  Identify programs and strategies in communities that have demonstrated success in increasing physical activity, access to healthy food and beverages, and reduced screen time among youth; highlighting those that increase health equity among populations with higher burden of childhood obesity
                  Develop recommendations for expanding programs and strategies statewide in consultation with cross- office staff
                  Conduct interviews, focus groups, or surveys with DEL staff and external partners to identify successful community programs and strategies
                  Conduct literature review to identify best practices and recommended strategies
                  Identify performance metrics, highlighting those that align with work DEL is already tracking 
                  Work through DEL’s processes to approve program, strategy and performance metrics recommendations
Develop recommendations for internal alignment of childhood obesity prevention work throughout DEL
 Qualifications:
 
DEL is most interested in candidates who meet or exceed the following criteria:
·        Bachelor’s degree or higher with nutrition or public health background; preference for licensed health professional
·        Background in education or successful management and implementation of programs in schools, or with youth
·        Minimum of three years’ experience in project management in a school, public health or youth services environment
·        Experience in developing and managing relationships with diverse groups/environments and individuals
·        Knowledge and experience of tools and resources in childhood health
·        Ability to manage multiple projects and act as a forward planner and strategic thinker
·        Excellent oral and written communication skills
·        Experience in facilitating effective meeting and expertise in delivering learner-centered training to diverse audiences
·        High degree of professionalism, creativity and integrity
·        Ability to take direction, as well as work independently and on a diverse team
·        Ability to work on multiple tasks and maintain flexibility to order to meet deadlines
·        Experience in collecting, organizing and analyzing data, writing reports and develop performances metrics
·        Experience working with and making presentations to elected officials
 
 Supplemental Information:
This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) which contains a “union security” provision.
